2016 Ram 1500: What the Critics Are Saying

We’re all aware of the Ram 1500’s place in the pickup truck segment. The 2015 model won a variety of awards, and last year’s version was generally regarded as one of the best trucks on the market. We’re expecting more of the same in 2016, and initial reviews have been more than positive. Let’s just take a look at some general opinions on the truck:

“The Ram 1500 is one of the best pickup trucks on the market today. It comes with a surprisingly smooth suspension and plenty of creature comforts to keep everyone happy during a long drive, yet the truck is tough and burly enough to handle all kinds of heavy objects in adverse situations.” – Truecar.com

“The 2016 Ram 1500 is a top contender in the full-size pickup segment, thanks to a winning combination of strong powertrains, a smooth ride and a well-trimmed cabin.” – Edmunds.com

Those are some pretty flattering reviews, leaving us with some pretty lofty expectations. However, are the reviews as positive for each individual aspect of the pickup? (Spoiler alert: they are). Before you go shopping around for a 2016 Ram 1500 in Miami, get a better understanding of what the critics are saying about the new pickup…

Performance

1500-2

“Test drivers praise the supple ride and the smooth-shifting eight-speed transmission. They add that the brakes are strong…Test drivers report the 2016 Ram 1500’s standard V6 engine provides adequate power, but the optional turbodiesel and V8 engines offer more impressive towing capabilities and quicker acceleration.” – USNews.com

Each of the pickup’s three engines offers their own specific capabilities. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 offers the best fuel economy of the two gas options, delivering an 18 city/25 highway mile per gallon efficiency. The unit also offers solid power specs, including 305 horsepower and 269 pounds-feet of torque (which result in a 7,610-pound towing capacity). The engine contains Variable Valve Timing, a “sophisticated thermal management system” that helps improve power and efficiency. The silent chain helps reduce engine noise, and the revamped fuel pump contributes to the fuel economy.

Meanwhile, the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine provides segment-leading power and hauling specs. The engine can deliver 395 horsepower and 410 pounds-feet of torque, resulting in an incredible 10,650-pound towing capacity. Meanwhile, the Fuel Saver Technology helps increase your vehicle’s economy, although the specs are already adequate (15 city/22 highway mpg).

Of course, it’s been the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 that has stolen all of the headlines. The power specs are certainly impressive, but many of enamored with the impressive fuel economy specs.

“Fuel economy for this diesel, as can be expected with this alternative fuel source, is wonderful.” -Stephen Elmer, AutoGuide.com

The unit provides strength and efficiency, with the system delivering 240 horsepower and 420 pounds-feet of torque. It also provides a 21 city/29 highway mpg fuel economy, a number that goes practically unmatched in the pickup segment.

Interior

1500-5

“Inside, the design and materials used are top notch, not only pleasing the eyes but also the hands. Functionally, everything is well laid out. For in-dash infotainment and information, the Ram does it best, with Uconnect providing a lag-free, easy to operate user interface.” – Elmer, AutoGuide.com

“Possibly the best interior in the truck world,” -Neil Vorano, The Globe And Mail

Many customers are drawn in by the 1500’s surprising amount of technology. The truck includes the Uconnect System and the 8.4-inch touchscreen. Drivers can activate a number of functions via the screen, including a navigation system and satellite radio. Drivers can also manipulate the interior climate control, and each passenger can customize their seating area to provide their optimal temperature. Speaking of interior technology, the customizable multiview display provides important vehicle diagnostic information via the seven-inch dial cluster.

While the technology may grab everyone’s attention, the interior stands out in other ways. European-sourced wood accents cover the interior, and you can choose to cover your seats with premium fabrics or a high-quality leather trim. This kind of luxury is often reserved for much smaller vehicles, and it’s rarely seen in pickups.

Exterior/Style

1500-3

“As with every full-sized pickup, this Ram is in-your-face macho; without the air suspension and optional steps, it’s a chore to climb into. But while the front end sports that giant, big-rig grille and bulging hood, the whole design is possibly the sleekest of its rivals.” – Vorano, The Globe And Mail

The pickup’s exterior includes so many distinctive features and amenities, it’s difficult to focus in on any one particular aspect. We’ll start with the class-exclusive Rambox Cargo Management system found in the 1500’s bed. The storage system will keep any of your delicate or expensive cargo secure, and an attached light means you can access the box anytime of day. Furthermore, the system is accompanied by the AllSecure remote security system, which will keep all of that said cargo protected (whether it be from the elements or thieves).

Up next is the improved Active Air Grille Shutters. The intimidating part is only added for aesthetic reasons, as it also helps cool the engine. When the truck is zooming on the highway, the grill will automatically close, helping to reduce drag and improve the vehicle’s efficiency.

There are plenty of other accessories you can add to your new pickup. Add a Tonneau Cover to keep everything in your truck bed dry, and the inclusion of wheel-to-wheel steps will mean passengers won’t struggle to get into the tall truck. Finally, the keyless entry allows you to remotely access the vehicle while also providing elite security.

Safety

1500-4

“Ram has made strides in making its safety measures accessible and actually useful.” – CarGurus.com

You’ll feel safe and secure in your Ram 1500 due to the advanced design. Dynamic crumple zones are found up front, helping to absorb any energy from a collision. The side-impact door beams will also reduce the amount of force sent to the passengers, thus keeping the occupants secure.

The four-wheel disc antilock brakes will prevent your wheels from locking up, and they’ll assure that your truck will continue on its intended path. The Electronic Stability Control will serve a similar function, as the various technology (Hill Start Assist, Trailer Sway Control, Rain Brake Support, Brake Assist and Ready Alert Braking) will help prevent any accidents.

The vehicle also contains the innovative ParkSense Front Park Assist System, which used radar sensors to alert the driver of any unseen objects. The ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera plays a similar role, as drivers can now see all of the happenings behind their pickup.

The Ram 1500 is one of the best pickups in the class, and we certainly didn’t need critics to relay that information. However, we respect these expert’s opinions, and it’s certainly indicative that all of these publications and writers were so willing to commend the 1500 for a variety of different factors, whether it be the vehicle’s performance, interior, exterior, or safety features. Of course, there’s only really one way to truly grasp the capabilities of the truck… and that’s getting behind the wheel!
