Will the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Turn Jeep Around?

Jeep’s been in a bit of trouble, facing a decline in U.S. sales for six consecutive years. Many dealers are still backlogged with 2024 Jeep models they couldn’t move, making it hard to make space for newer models, like a 2026 Jeep Cherokee for sale now. When drivers see brand-new two-year-old models on a lot, it doesn’t instill much confidence in the manufacturer.

Why does this happen? Jeep has possibly relied too heavily on its reputation for off-road prowess and failed to recognize other areas where it hasn’t kept up with the competition. Think of it like a bodybuilder who forgot to have a personality. At the end of the day, we have to remember that many shoppers still compare Jeep models to other regular SUVs and trucks. All the 4X4 capability in the world can’t outshine competitors that are just better all around.

What’s Jeep’s answer to this problem? They’re bringing the compact Cherokee out of retirement. We haven’t seen this small but mighty model since 2023, and now Jeep has made major changes to it, hoping to help rebrand the manufacturer as more accessible.

The Cherokee Finally Gets a Hybrid Powertrain

For 2026, the Cherokee returns with a 1.6L turbo I-4 hybrid powertrain as its only engine option. This is one area where the Cherokee was lagging. It’s surprising because, given Jeep’s reputation as an adventure brand, you’d think they would have considered that their average customer likes to explore far-off places, and far-off places require a lot of fuel to reach.

Several of Jeep’s competitors, like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape, have already had hybrid options for years. The Escape got its first hybrid engine back in 2005. Jeep can’t turn back time, but at least now its drivers can finally get more serviceable MPGs out of the Cherokee.

A Lower Starting Price

This is a big one, because pricing has historically been an issue for Jeep. If we look back at the 2023 models of its competitors (since that’s the last time we had the Cherokee), the cost difference is noticeable. The 2023 Jeep Cherokee started at $37,695. Each of its main competitors, the RAV4, CR-V, and Escape, started at under $28,500 for the same year. Having to spend almost $10,000 extra to get into the Cherokee was, naturally, a major deterrent for many shoppers. No wonder Jeep saw such low sales during recent years.

After a whole three years off the market, the Cherokee returns with a starting MSRP of $35,000. Jeep somehow managed to make the 2026 Cherokee cost less than the 2023 model while significantly updating it, plus adding a hybrid powertrain, which will lead to even more savings over time. In comparison, the 2026 Honda CR-V hybrid starts at $35,630. Toyota doesn’t offer a traditional hybrid version of the RAV4, and the plug-in hybrid starts at $41,500. Ford discontinued the Escape, so it no longer exists as a competitor. While Honda and Toyota’s non-hybrid versions cost slightly less than the Cherokee, the Jeep is now the least expensive hybrid option.

Solid Standard Features Across the Lineup

The main idea behind the 2026 Cherokee is that it offers many features as standard equipment across all trims that are sometimes only available as premium add-ons on other models. Jeep is making a big push to show consumers that you can look at them as makers of solid daily drivers, and you won’t pay extra for the good stuff. Considering that the following features are standard on every trim, I’d say Jeep did pretty well.

Big, Colorful, and Useful Screens

Every 2026 Cherokee comes with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, along with a 10.25-inch full-color digital instrument cluster. The former is where you’ll take advantage of wireless smartphone connectivity, too. For reference, the 2023 Cherokee had an 8.4-inch touchscreen, so Jeep has made a big improvement in display size.

The 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster shows you vehicle and journey stats. For a vehicle as active as a Jeep, a big instrument cluster just makes sense. You’ll want to see when certain off-road features are in action, how far you’ve traveled during this trip, activated safety features, and the hybrid engine at work.

Serious Safety Features

Safety features that are usually costly add-ons on other models come standard here, like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. Standard automatic braking with vehicle detection is normal, but pedestrian and cyclist detection is usually an option drivers pay extra for on competing models. Rear park assist with rear automatic emergency braking comes standard, too. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection is also standard.

The big one, however, is the standard Active Driving Assist system. This works with adaptive cruise control to maintain a safe following distance and your desired speed. It also adds lane-centering technology, keeping you centered with constant, subtle adjustments as you drive. Drowsy driver detection is also in place to notify you when it might be time to pull over and take a nap or a coffee break.

These are just some of the standard safety features. There are even more, but this handful is particularly notable because these types of features usually cost extra, but they don’t on the 2026 Cherokee.

More Space for More Gear

One major difference you’ll notice if you look at the interiors of the 2023 and 2026 models side by side is the cargo space. For 2026, it’s much bigger than ever before. The 2023 Cherokee offered 54.7 cu.ft with its rear rows down. The new 2026 model offers a whopping 68.3 cu.ft of cargo space when the rear seats are down. That’s nearly an extra 14 cu.ft of cargo room in the latest Cherokee. Think of how many more backpacks you can get in there. Think of the folding bikes or strollers you can get in there. Think of all the shopping you can do. Could you even maybe sleep back there on a camping trip?

The 2026 Cherokee Gives You More for Less

Can the 2026 Cherokee help revive the Jeep brand? Can it perhaps position Jeep as a manufacturer that makes vehicles for everyday drivers and ordinary budgets? Is it competitive with its, well, competitors (even if it previously didn’t believe it had to be due to its off-road advantages)?

Bringing the price down significantly, especially compared to competitors’ current offerings, should definitely help, given all the perks that come standard, like advanced safety features and large display screens. The much larger cargo area should draw in drivers, especially those who tend to pack a lot of stuff. The star of the show, of course, is the new hybrid powertrain. It’s about time the Cherokee got one of those.

The fact that Jeep took so long to give the Cherokee a hybrid engine is baffling, but at least they finally got there. Hopefully, they got there in time to turn their sales around. Only time will tell, but I think as long as Jeep does a good enough job getting the word out about the Cherokee’s new lower price and higher value, it stands a chance of saving the brand.
