From its introduction in the 1990s, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has established a reputation for itself, thanks to its off-road capabilities, a wide variety of trim levels and associated features, and elevated amenities that distinguish it from its Cherokee namesake. For many, the Grand Cherokee was the preeminent all-terrain capable two-row SUV of the era, offering 4WD performance and luxury in one rugged, well-appointed package.
If you’ve seen a Jeep Grand Cherokee for sale recently, you may have noticed that it bears little resemblance to the blocky behemoth that rose to popularity in decades past. While the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee preserves hints of the traditional Jeep aesthetic and the brand’s capability beyond the end of the pavement, the newest edition in the storied line has emerged as the perfect representation of what a modern SUV should be.
It’s refined and reliable, offering the choice of gas-only or hybrid powertrains, advanced technology both inside and outside the cabin, and a design that stays true to the Jeep legacy while embracing the future. With a refreshed look, a powerful new engine option, and improved technology throughout its design, the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee sets a new standard for what an upscale off-road capable SUV can be.
New Engine Option
Although the Grand Cherokee line already offered both gas-powered and plug-in hybrid powertrains in previous model years, the 2026 incarnation introduces a third, more powerful engine option. Drivers can opt for any of the three engine options with confidence, but for those seeking additional power and torque, the new Hurricane turbocharged powerplant is sure to draw interest.
2.0-liter Hurricane Turbocharged I-4
The new addition to the Grand Cherokee’s lineup of available engines is impressive, as the 2.0-liter Hurricane turbocharged I-4 offers more raw power than the previous gasoline-powered engine. Paired with an all-new Gen IV 8-speed automatic transmission, the Hurricane generates up to 324 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. It launches from a standstill more quickly, and the increased power and torque provide a best-in-class towing capacity of up to 6,200 lbs.
The Hurricane engine provides improved performance without sacrificing fuel economy. According to the manufacturer’s estimated fuel efficiency, the Grand Cherokee equipped with the 2.0-liter Hurricane remains economical in its fuel use. It has a manufacturer-estimated fuel efficiency of 21 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway.
Previous Powertrains Still Available
While not new for the 2026 model year, the two engines previously offered in the Grand Cherokee remain available in the current edition of the SUV. There’s the time-tested 3.6-liter PentaStar V6 that produces 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. For drivers who prize superior fuel efficiency, there’s also the 2.0-liter Turbocharged I-4 PHEV engine that delivers up to 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. It also achieves excellent mileage, with a manufacturer-estimated city/highway fuel economy rating of 56 MPG and an estimated electric-only range of 25 miles.
Bigger, Better Technology
The Grand Cherokee offers advanced modern technology throughout its cabin and beyond, keeping drivers connected and engaged as they embark on adventures wherever they may lead. With larger screens and improved technology, the robust lineup of infotainment and driver assistance features in previous incarnations of the Grand Cherokee has expanded and evolved.
Bigger Infotainment Screen
One of the most noticeable upgrades to the Grand Cherokee’s technology is the larger standard screen, seamlessly integrated into the cabin’s fresh design. The new standard infotainment screen measures 12.3 inches, with an optional additional 10.25-inch passenger screen. The 2025 Grand Cherokee features a smaller 8.4-inch or optional 10.1-inch touchscreen display, resulting in a marked increase in both visibility and user-friendliness. The new touchscreen also features integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions, as well as Bluetooth streaming.
Upgraded Systems and Features
In addition to the upgraded hardware, the Grand Cherokee incorporates more advanced systems into its design. For example, the available Active Driving Assist system offers lane‑centering, adaptive cruise control, and other driver-assist features. When equipped with Hands‑Free Active Driving Assist on approved highways, it allows drivers to remove their hands from the wheel while the system manages steering and speed—but drivers must remain attentive and keep their eyes on the road at all times.
The latest-generation Uconnect 5 infotainment system comes standard in the 2026 Grand Cherokee and offers a significant upgrade over previous versions. It offers faster streaming, improved wireless connectivity, enhanced voice recognition, advanced navigation, and built-in Amazon Alexa capabilities. These system improvements help to keep you engaged and immersed without distracting you from the primary task of driving.
Redesigned Interior and Exterior
The refresh of the Grand Cherokee’s aesthetics is easily noticeable, as both the interior and the exterior features of the SUV were refined and, in many cases, upgraded. The retooled look of the Grand Cherokee gives it show-stopping curb appeal, remaining true to its rugged, timeless aesthetic while refining its appearance for the modern age.
More Modern Exterior
The design of the Grand Cherokee has undergone significant changes since its introduction, with the squared, blocky lines of the first-generation models evolving into a more aerodynamically suitable design that reflects a modern focus on a streamlined aesthetic and improved fuel efficiency. The new Grand Cherokee still features the trademark slotted Jeep grille and retains the rigid, upright stance that distinguished its predecessors in a crowded field of SUVs.
However, the amendments give the newest Grand Cherokee modern flair. The redesigned headlights offer a sleek, chic look, and the modified rear and lower fascia feature larger intakes that enhance airflow, giving the Grand Cherokee a more aggressive silhouette. Even the time-honored Jeep grille has received slight tweaks, as the 7-slot grille was updated to reflect a more modern design while drawing a direct line to the SUV’s storied lineage.
Superficially, the new Grand Cherokee offers all-new exterior trim finishes and a wider selection of wheel sizes and styles, allowing you to create the look you want, from the off-road savvy Trailhawk to the polished elegance of the Limited trim. Jeep is even offering new exterior paint colors with the 2026 edition, with new hues like Fathom Blue, Steel Blue, and Copper Shino.
More Spacious and Comfortable Interior
Inside the cabin, the 2026 Grand Cherokee offers a comfortable and well-appointed interior loaded with convenience and comfort features. Along with the bigger, more accessible touchscreen, the new Grand Cherokee features a redesigned dashboard that’s more intuitive, allowing you quick access to important information without taking your eyes off the road. The redesign provides more storage space at the bottom of the dash, and the touchscreen is positioned higher for improved line-of-sight visibility. The new touch-sensitive climate controls have been relocated to just below the screen for enhanced ergonomics.
Other interior embellishments available in the new Grand Cherokee include a refreshed center console with built-in wireless charging capability and a metal rotary transmission selector. You can opt for an incredibly comfortable 16-way adjustable driver’s seat with memory and massage features. In upper trims, you can choose an optional 19-custom-designed speakers McIntosh audio system that bathes the cabin in immersive sound. Even the materials used in the Grand Cherokee have been upgraded, with elevated available interior trim materials, such as satin chrome and teak. Despite the Grand Cherokee’s rugged, off-road legacy, the interior is polished and refined, offering opulent features you’d expect to find in a luxury SUV.
A New Era for the Grand Cherokee
In many cases, the average refresh of an established SUV involves only minor performance tweaks and rejuvenated aesthetics. Still, I’m impressed with the comprehensive improvements Jeep has made to the 2026 Grand Cherokee. The enhancements go well beyond the surface, with the new Hurricane turbocharged engine option sure to thrill performance enthusiasts. At the same time, this year’s tech upgrades position the Grand Cherokee at the forefront of the competitive midsize SUV segment. The exterior refresh retains the traits that customers will readily identify with the Jeep brand while modernizing the overall look of the Grand Cherokee. The thoughtful interior updates help the Grand Cherokee better fit the needs of the modern driver.
With a long legacy of rugged off-road credibility and elevated features, the new Grand Cherokee has taken a step forward by meeting the changing demands of the American car buyer. The midsize SUV market segment is flooded with options, but the Grand Cherokee’s more recent enhancements help it stand out from the crowd.
