Creating a popular pickup is no small task in this day and age. Automakers have to walk a narrow line when crafting any vehicle, but this is especially true of the full-size truck segment. Old-school owners have big expectations when it comes to the towing, hauling, and off-road ability of their full-size models, but a new generation of drivers also expect their truck to include all of the latest comfort, convenience, and infotainment tech, not to mention modern styling and family-friendly features that’ll keep their loved ones safe and satisfied.
Enter the 2027 Silverado 1500. The new fifth-generation model checks all the boxes, blending the traditional strengths of a pickup with a host of new features that clearly mark it as a modern pickup. From a pair of new, larger V8 engines and a thoroughly refreshed cabin to new exterior styling and the largest infotainment display in the full-size segment, the Silverado makes some major changes with the debut of the 2027 model. New and Improved V8 Engines
There’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to the new Silverado 1500, and while the pickup’s bold styling, tech-forward interior, and enhanced Super Cruise hands-free driving system all warrant a mention, it’s the goods under the hood that have drivers talking.
The 2027 Silverado retains its popular 2.7L TurboMax turbocharged I-4 base engine, though it makes one key improvement. The truck also retains one of the last diesels in the full-size segment with the award-winning 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel I-6. The Silverado also made some compelling changes to the pickup’s V8 lineup. Gone are the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s found in the 2026 model, replaced by larger engines that could place the pickup near the top of its class. While today’s turbocharged I-4 engines and thrifty diesel engines are hard to beat from an efficiency perspective, some drivers will tell you that there’s just no substitute for the sort of performance that a good old-fashioned V8 can provide.
Chevy claims that the new 5.7L and 6.6L V8s will make the Silverado the market’s most powerful naturally aspirated V8 truck, but you’ll have to take their word for it. The automaker has yet to release any specific specs for horsepower and torque, though it’s fair to assume that the upsized engines will easily top the 355 hp and 420 hp produced by the older 5.3L and 6.2L engines, respectively. The V8s don’t really face much competition, with the Ford F-150’s 400-hp 5.0L Coyote V8 and the Ram 1500’s 395-hp 5.7L HEMI V8 representing the only real rivals outside the Silverado’s corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra 1500.
The Chevy’s outgoing 6.2L version already topped much of the full-size segment with its 13,200-lb towing capacity, and the 5.3L V8 was tough to beat in terms of payload capacity, hauling 2,180 lbs, which leaves plenty of reason to be excited about the new V8 offerings. Chevy’s “most powerful naturally aspirated V8 truck” claim sure sounds impressive, but only time will tell if the truck can live up to the title.
A Tech-Forward Interior
While we could all probably do with a little less screen time, the 2027 Silverado makes that difficult. A new slate of infotainment tech is par for the course when designing a next-generation pickup, but the latest model goes above and beyond with a generous array that instantly rockets it to the top of the full-size segment.
Chevy embraces a refreshing trend with the 2027 Silverado. Automakers have long been content to stick a modest display in their entry-level models, forcing buyers to upgrade to pricier trims and optional equipment packages to access a larger screen. That seems to be changing with the release of the 2027 roster, as most major brands are opting to equip every model with the larger display right out of the box.
Ram continues to offer three options, but Chevy, Ford, Toyota, and GMC all stick with just one screen for the new model year. The Silverado easily outpaces the rest of the pack with a 16.3-inch display that’s only matched by the GMC Sierra 1500. Again, this seems to be a trend in the full-size class, with Ram and GMC also offering passenger displays on their latest models.
Standard on the ZR2 and High Country trims, the 11.5-inch display gives your front-seat passenger all the tools they need to be an effective co-pilot. From managing GPS directions and looking up points of interest to accessing the truck’s various towing apps and even streaming their favorite media, the passenger display is one of Chevy’s more cutting-edge features.
GM’s critically acclaimed Super Cruise hands-free driving system also sees a major upgrade with the release of the 2027 Silverado. Chevy is not only expanding the availability of the popular hands-free system, but also improving its functionality, especially when it comes time to do a little towing.
The additional mass of a fully loaded trailer can be tough for your run-of-the-mill hands-free system to handle, especially when it comes to braking safely. While many of the truck’s upper trims already supported towing when utilizing the Super Cruise system, Chevy now extends this feature to much of the lineup for the 2027 model year.
Form and Function Meet in Bold New Design
If you want a pickup that’s playing it safe in terms of design, you might need to look elsewhere. Chevy has made some bold design decisions in crafting the fifth-generation Silverado, immediately setting it apart from its full-size peers with its head-turning style. A revised front fascia includes a more distinctive grille, while retaining the squared-off proportions that have become the Silverado’s signature look.
The truck’s new LED taillights lend it a modern feel, but the LED headlights pack a neat party trick: they can play an animated lighting sequence. The brand hasn’t overlooked the interior, with the 2027 Silverado 1500 adding new features and premium materials throughout the lineup. The premium High Country trim is the biggest beneficiary, with Chevy adding everything from real wood trim and Tritan Satin accents to new-and-improved seat belts and custom upholstery options, including available microfiber suede. Today’s full-size trucks serve as everything from spacious family vehicles and dedicated towing rigs to off-road adventure vehicles, but the Silverado’s ability to put in a hard day’s work has earned it considerable acclaim over the years. The 2027 model is no exception, showcasing Chevy’s latest Multi-Flex feature. The automaker first introduced its six-function Multi-Flex tailgate on the 2021 Silverado, and followed it up with the unique Multi-Flex Midgate, a folding wall between the cabin and cargo bed, on the Silverado EV in 2024.

The new Silverado shows where the full-size segment is headed while still honoring the pickup’s past. Sure, it might include some fancy new gadgets like the 16.5-inch infotainment display, 11.5-inch passenger display, and one of the industry’s best hands-free driving systems in Super Cruise, but these tech-forward features don’t come at the cost of the truck’s jobsite credentials.
This is underscored by Chevy’s commitment to the V8 design. While eight-cylinder options have become increasingly hard to find in today’s pickup segment, the bowtie brand is introducing new, improved engines that give owners the power they need to get the job done. The same goes for the truck’s turbo-diesel, which will probably rank as the segment’s most efficient engine, with 25 MPG combined in 2026 models.
It’s easy to tell when a model has been restyled solely for marketing, but the Silverado’s interior and exterior improvements all seem to serve a functional purpose. From improving safety and performance to enhancing the truck’s off-road capability and creating a more premium driving experience, Chevy has shown a deft touch in designing the all-new 2027 Silverado 1500.
