The Most Influential Autos of 2025

As 2025 draws to a close, it is time to look back on the model releases of the past year and highlight the most influential new vehicles. The automotive industry has again seen a torrent of all-new models, bold redesigns, and groundbreaking technologies reshaping how we drive. In this market overflowing with options—from efficient daily commuters to high-performance machines—influence isn’t measured by sales figures alone, but by the vehicles that challenge conventions, introduce game-changing innovations, and set the benchmark for what comes next. These are the models that don’t just follow trends; they create them, inspiring competitors and redefining entire segments for years to come.

For 2025, our Most Influential Autos awards celebrate six standout categories that capture the breadth of today’s automotive landscape, from everyday sedans and SUVs to off-roaders and sports cars. Across these winners, we’ll see familiar threads, such as the relentless march toward electrification and more advanced technologies. In fact, only two of our winners do not incorporate some form of electrification. However, each of these six vehicles put its own unique spin on the segment that it competes in, earning its distinction as one of the most influential autos of the year.

Most Influential Truck: 2025 Ford Maverick

  • More capable hybrid option.
  • New Lobo street truck variant.
  • New Tremor off-road trim.
  • Larger screen than the F-150.

For many years, it looked like the compact truck segment was gone for good as buyers opted for larger and larger pickups. Then the Maverick came roaring onto the scene for the 2022 model year and showed everyone that the appetite for an affordable and practical pickup truck was far larger than anyone thought. Sales have continued to grow every year since its introduction, with over 140,000 units sold in the first 11 months of 2025. That puts the little Maverick neck and neck with full-size models like the Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra in terms of sales.

This single-handed resurrection of a dead segment is already enough to earn the Maverick a place as one of the most influential automobiles of recent years, but Ford wasn’t done and has found several ways to improve the Maverick as part of its 2025 refresh. The most important of these updates was evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, but the Blue Oval tossed some fun surprises into the mix as well.

Most importantly, Ford is leaning harder into electrification and has made some major improvements to the Maverick’s hybrid powertrain option. In previous model years, the Maverick Hybrid was only available in front-wheel drive and had a max towing capacity of just 2,000 lbs. Now, there is an all-wheel drive variant, and the hybrid can pull 4,000 lbs, putting it on a level playing field with the EcoBoost engine option. Those are big updates that make the hybrid far more viable for more truck owners, proving that electrification has a growing place in the truck segment.

However, the fun features are what really seal the deal. The one that really has everyone talking is the new Maverick Lobo street truck. With a lowered suspension, the big brakes from the Ford Focus ST, a seven-speed transmission from the Edge ST, and a torque-vectoring rear differential, the Lobo is a parts bin specially designed for tearing up the asphalt. For drivers who’d rather go off-road, the Tremor also made the jump from a package to a full-fledged trim for the 2025 model, proving that the compact Maverick can go just about anywhere and do just about anything, earning its place as the Most Influential Truck of 2025.

Most Influential SUV: 2025 Ford Bronco Sport

  • New Sasquatch Package.
  • More utility features.
  • Upgraded infotainment technology.
  • Enhanced standard safety features.

Compact SUVs may be a dime a dozen these days, but the Bronco Sport is a testament that entries in this mainstream segment don’t have to be boring. It may share its bones with the nondescript Ford Escape, but the Bronco Sport puts an entirely new spin on the platform, bringing some serious style and capability while remaining affordable. For its 2025 redesign, it leans even further into its mission of being the most capable off-roader in the compact SUV segment with some major new upgrades.

Foremost among them is the new Sasquatch Package for the Outer Banks and Badlands trims. This package was first introduced on the bigger Bronco, where it brings serious off-road features, like 35-inch all-terrain tires and front and rear locking differentials. The littler Sasquatch isn’t quite that capable, but it gets far closer than might be expected for a compact SUV. Its 29-inch all-terrain tires, underbody armor, and front push bar let everyone know that this isn’t just an appearance package. It’s something that can actually be taken to the trail.

Ford also equipped the 2025 Bronco Sport with some fun utility features that aren’t usually seen on mainstream SUVs. Pop-out tie-down points on the front fenders are rated for 150 lb loads, “Bronco Bolts” let drivers add accessories for adventures, and segment-exclusive upfitter switches take customization to the next level. While we might not see many Bronco Sport models out at Moab and other off-road destinations, it’s certainly capable enough for a real overlanding adventure.

But the 2025 Bronco Sport isn’t a one-trick pony either—Ford made sure to keep it practical for all the SUV drivers who just want something fun to drive to work every day. In addition to all the new off-road gear, it is filled with upgraded convenience features like a massive new infotainment setup, and it now comes standard with the more capable Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ suite. This blend of unprecedented capability and everyday usability is what has made the Bronco Sport our Most Influential SUV of 2025.

Most Influential Sedan: 2025 Toyota Camry

  • Standard hybrid powertrain.
  • Enhanced performance.
  • More standard features.
  • Upgraded technology.

As the best-selling sedan in America for over two decades, the Camry needs no introduction—or so you might think. But the truth is that this beloved model underwent a radical change for the 2025 model year that is pushing the entire sedan segment into the future. While the Camry has been available with an optional hybrid powertrain on and off since the 2007 model, for the 2025 redesign, Toyota went all-in and made every new Camry a hybrid with no traditional gasoline engine option.

That’s a bold move, and not many manufacturers would be willing to take such a risk with a best-selling product like the Camry, but Toyota didn’t hesitate, and its gamble has more than paid off. In fact, Camry sales for the first three quarters of 2025 are at a four-year high. The reasons for this are obvious—the new hybrid powertrain is simply better. Not only does it get over 50 MPG combined, but its 225 hp is more than any other standard powertrain in the segment, and it is the only midsize sedan with an all-wheel drive hybrid option. With specs like that, who wants a traditional gasoline engine?

The new Camry has also received updated styling that makes it appear much sportier and more modern. Midsize sedans were once infamous for their bland appearance, but the newest generation of models is bringing a more premium flair, and the Camry is among the models leading the way. Finally, Toyota has equipped the Camry with considerably more standard and available features to provide an elevated driving experience that matches its style and engineering.

But perhaps most impressively, the 2025 Camry continues to start under $30,000, keeping it cost-competitive with other midsize sedan models that are powered by far less impressive engine options. Any of these updates would have been enough to keep the Camry as the model to beat in the sedan segment, but all of them together, while keeping an affordable price tag, easily make the Camry our Most Influential Sedan of 2025.

Most Influential Luxury Vehicle: 2025 Cadillac OPTIQ

  • Unique styling details.
  • Over 300 miles of range.
  • Standard all-wheel drive.
  • Advanced features.

Back in 2021, Cadillac made the bold announcement that it would discontinue all of its gasoline-powered vehicles and transition to an EV-only lineup by 2030. While the brand has since started walking back that promise, the new 2025 Cadillac OPTIQ might just be the most important model yet in making it a possibility, demonstrating how EVs are increasingly becoming the new face of luxury vehicles.

Currently, the all-electric Cadillac LYRIQ is the brand’s third best-selling model, after the iconic Cadillac Escalade and the not-so-iconic Cadillac XT5. Given that the LYRIQ costs over $14,000 more than the gas-powered XT5, it’s actually impressive that sales of the brand’s two midsize SUVs are so close. But what if buyers could get the modern performance and features of the LYRIQ and a price closer to that of the XT5? That’s where the OPTIQ comes in.

Cadillac’s new compact SUV launched with a standard dual-motor electric powertrain providing 300 hp and 302 miles of range—a bit less than the LYRIQ in both cases, but not by much. The OPTIQ also comes filled with all the luxury features expected of a Cadillac, including plush seating, exceptional audio systems, Super Cruise hands-free driving, and a massive 33-inch wraparound display. Finally, it displays a more modern take on the Cadillac design language, with unique touches like patterned rear quarter glass and a black crystal grille, giving it a much sharper and more youthful feel than most Cadillac SUVs.

But most importantly, the price range of the OPTIQ actually overlaps with that of the XT5. That makes going electric far more approachable for buyers, and could substantially boost sales of the new model. It may seem odd to focus on affordability for luxury vehicles, but affordability is the largest barrier to adoption of EVs, and the narrowing price disparity between gas and electric models in the luxury segment is a major step forward. By making an EV a more attractive option for luxury SUV buyers—both financially and literally—the OPTIQ is our Most Influential Luxury Vehicle of 2025.

Most Influential Off-Road Vehicle: 2025 Toyota 4Runner

  • First redesign since 2010.
  • Standard turbocharged engine.
  • Available hybrid powertrain.
  • More off-road options

Prior to 2025, the Toyota 4Runner had become one of those vehicles that was a throwback to a different era. Last redesigned in 2010, it just kept chugging along with its ancient 4.0L V6 engine and thoroughly obsolete five-speed transmission. Although many drivers loved it for its old-school nature, it was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore that the 4Runner was underpowered, inefficient, and extremely dated. Now, when faced with having this sort of vehicle in their lineup, many manufacturers would either discontinue it entirely or reimagine it into something totally different that alienates fans. Toyota didn’t either.

The redesigned 2025 4Runner is now a thoroughly modern vehicle that stays true to its predecessors. In fact, it looks so much like the previous model that the average person might not even realize they are looking at the redesigned version—although fans will quickly see the more modern design touches that pay homage to the past without looking dated. The biggest changes are inside the cabin and under the hood, providing a modern driving experience with all the off-road capability drivers are looking for in this legendary model.

The old V6 was replaced with two new powertrain options: a proven 2.4L turbocharged engine that can be found in many current Toyota models, and a hybrid version of the same engine. Compared to the previous powertrain, the new engines and eight-speed transmission provide both more power and greater efficiency, pleasing both adventurers and commuters. However, Toyota made sure to keep the 4Runner’s true four-wheel drive system with a two-speed transfer case and locking rear differential. Plus, it comes with 33-inch all-terrain tires on select trims.

While the TRD Pro has been a staple of the 4Runner lineup since 2015, bringing serious off-road capability to an already rugged vehicle, Toyota has expanded the selection of off-road trims for 2025. The new Trailhunter trim complements the TRD Pro, trading in the high-end FOX suspension and sportier design features for more practical upgrades like a full set of steel skid plates and a large roof rack. While many off-roaders will still want to build their own rig, more factory options are never a bad thing. This dedication to enhancing what everyone loves about the 4Runner while bringing it into the modern era has made it our Most Influential Off-Road Vehicle of 2025.

A yellow 2025 Chevy Corvette ZR1 parked in a showroom.

Most Influential Performance Vehicle: 2025 Chevy Corvette ZR1

  • First turbocharged Corvette.
  • Over 1,000 hp.
  • Sub 10-second quarter mile.
  • Over 1,200 lbs of downforce.

The Corvette ZR1 is known as the King of the Hill for a reason, building its reputation by embarrassing many far more expensive sports cars over the years, and the latest version is a real monster. While there are certainly even faster cars out there, none of them come close to the value that the 2025 ZR1 brings to the table. Before we get into all the performance specs, it’s important to highlight the most important number—$174,995.

That starting price is certainly a lot of money, but its spare change compared to the seven-figure price tags of some of the cars the new ZR1 has taken down. And unlike those limited-production exotics that only get more expensive as the years go by, Chevy is building enough of these cars that middle-class car enthusiasts will be able to afford them down the road when depreciation starts hitting. After all, this is America’s Sports Car, not some elitist European model meant for billionaires.

But what do you get for that money? Well, Chevy slapped a pair of 76mm turbos on the 5.5L flat-plane-crank engine of the Corvette Z06 to send no less than 1,064 hp to the rear wheels. That’s a big change from the supercharged 6.2L in the C7 ZR1, and really emphasises the supercar nature of the new mid-engine Corvette. And aside from making the C8 look like a discount Ferrari, that mid-engine design means you don’t have to be an F1 driver to keep all of that power under control (the 1,200 lbs of downforce in the optional aero package also helps).

But what really matters is when the rubber hits the road, and the ZR1 has the timeslips and lap records to prove its supercar credentials. With a 9.6-second quarter mile, it is as fast as a Dodge Challenger Demon 170 in a straight line in real-world conditions, and things only get better on the track. In fact, Chevy set new lap records with the ZR1 at five iconic American tracks and laid down a 6:50.763 at the Nurburgring, outpacing the far more expensive Ford Mustang GTD to become the fastest American car on the Green Hell. That more than warrants the Corvette ZR1 being our Most Influential Performance Vehicle of 2025.
