What Does the Mustang Mach-E Get Right?

For more than a century, Ford has been making some of the most popular vehicles on the road. That’s a legacy you can’t buy or find a shortcut to; it has to be earned. This kind of reputation does two things: it tells us what Ford has focused on in the past and creates a high standard the brand has to meet in the future. Such a bold legacy is abundantly clear from the moment you set eyes on the all-electric Mustang Mach-E and everything it has to offer. Whether you’re interested in a Mustang Mach-E for sale or simply want to know more about what Ford has done in designing this SUV, you’re in for a treat.

To fully appreciate what the Mustang Mach-E brings to the road, I think it’s best to look at what it offers compared to some of its direct competitors. While the most immediate competitor you might think of is the Tesla Model Y, that’s far from the only one—in fact, this is a growing class with more vehicles hitting the road each year. From the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 to the Volkswagen ID.4 and Nissan ARIYA, Ford has a lot of competition to deal with when it comes to the Mustang Mach-E. However, Ford has done a lot of things right so far and delivered a high-performance electrified SUV that can go toe to toe with the competition.

Bold Power and Performance

When Ford first announced the Mustang Mach-E, there was concern about whether an electric SUV could really live up to the Mustang name. Not only has the Mustang Mach-E put those worries to rest, but it has done so in a way that makes it an absolute joy to drive. While not every model is about to hit the racetrack, they’re all a lot of fun on the road, with instant torque that gets going immediately and plenty of power packed into them. The base model 2023 Mustang Mach-E has a rear-wheel drive powertrain with 266 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, which is better than most models of its size. If you go with the GT Performance Edition, then you’re looking at 480 hp and 634 lb-ft of torque, which flies along the road (or track).

By comparison, you’ve got models like the Hyundai IONIQ 5, which comes standard with just 168 hp. Even the top trim only offers 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque—that’s impressive but clearly short of the Mustang Mach-E’s track-ready performance. Other rides similarly fall behind; you’ve got the VW ID.4 that tops out at 330 hp and the Nissan ARIYA with 389 hp at best. The ARIYA can go from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, which is fantastic for an SUV but well behind the 3.5 seconds it takes for Ford’s beauty to hit that speed.

Impressive and Practical Range

If you have any interest in EVs, then you probably know that one of the most important factors people look for is range. People worry that EVs won’t be able to get them where they need to go and will leave them stranded somewhere without any power—there’s even a cute name for this: “range anxiety.” To counter this, manufacturers have worked hard to deliver models with the best range possible, which you can clearly see with the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The goal everyone has been shooting for is right around 300 miles of estimated range from a full charge, and Ford nails it.

The 2023 California Route 1 trim, with electric all-wheel drive and the Extended Range battery, boasts an estimated 312 miles of total range from a full charge. Just as remarkable is that it can still go from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds while achieving such an impressive range. Other EVs in this class come close to this mark: the Hyundai IONIQ 5 can get up to an estimated 303 miles, the Nissan ARIYA up to 304 miles, and the VW ID.4 tops out at 291 miles. But every little bit helps, and you can see that Ford has designed the Mustang Mach-E to get drivers everywhere we want to go.

The Right Amount of Options

One of my favorite things about the Mustang Mach-E is that it’s available in several different configurations designed to offer a wide range of driving experiences. First, you can choose either a Standard Range 72 kWh battery or an Extended Range 91 kWh battery; this lets you decide how far you want your EV to go. Second, you can pick either a single-motor option with rear-wheel drive engineering or a dual-motor model with eAWD. This creates four impressive combinations offered on different trims to let you focus on what matters most to you. The Mustang Mach-E’s competition has followed suit with similar options, though they often fall short: the IONIQ 5’s best battery is a 77.4 kWh option, for example.

A Gorgeous Interior—Not Overdesigned

This is a particular sticking point for me, and while not everyone will agree with my preferences, I’m going to point them out anyway. The interior of the Ford Mustang Mach-E is gorgeous, with sleek lines that look completely contemporary and incredibly refined. There’s plenty of room inside for you and your passengers, plus impressive technology like its massive 15.5-inch vertically-mounted infotainment display that comes standard. I’ll gladly take this interior over the Tesla Model Y, which has such a stripped-down cabin that it feels like something is missing. Everything in the Tesla is controlled through a single, large infotainment screen, leaving drivers fumbling with and checking the display rather than being able to reach for a volume or climate control knob while keeping their eyes on the road. The big screen in the Tesla Model Y looks great, but ultimately, it feels empty or barebones, which I’m not a fan of.

Connecting the Future to the Past

As I said earlier, there was some uproar about an electric SUV bearing the Mustang name, but I think this was ultimately a smart move by Ford. Other brands like Nissan and Hyundai have chosen new, flashy, or somewhat futuristic-sounding names for their big EV models. But “IONIQ” and “ARIYA” are both a bit awkward and sound like something strange and unknown. Ford, instead, connected the future of its lineup to the past by creating a new offering that still sounds familiar. This was a brilliant move, and we can already see other brands like Chevy following this trend to try to catch up with the lead Ford has gained.

Focusing on the Ride Above All Else

At the end of the day, this is where the Mustang Mach-E comes out on top: Ford has built an EV SUV that’s fun to drive. With this SUV, the engineers haven’t tried to chase after gimmicks like removing all controls from the interior or focusing on the range at the expense of all else. The Mustang Mach-E is simply a great ride; it’s a vehicle that wants to be driven, and Ford has brought all of its knowledge and experience to bear in its design. This is a huge part of why this model has been so successful—one test drive is all it takes to feel everything that’s great about this SUV.

The Mustang Mach-E Continues to Get It Right

No single vehicle is going to be absolutely perfect for every driver, but with the Mustang Mach-E, Ford has shown that they can make an electric SUV that comes remarkably close. The only real sticking point is the price tag—with so much focus on power, performance, and incredible engineering, the Mustang Mach-E is outside of many drivers’ budgets. But so is the standard Mustang; this is a performance-focused model, after all. Ford will use what it has learned in developing the Mustang Mach-E and offer more EV models for a wide range of drivers because that’s what the brand has been doing for more than 100 years. For those of us looking for a driving experience that can’t be beaten, however, the Mustang Mach-E brings everything we want—and more—to the road.
