Nissan has decided not to update the existing engine or add an upgrade option, leaving those who want some extra power for their sedan out in the cold.

Instead, the lone engine that powered the eighth-generation Sentra is back for another go-around. This 2.0L inline-four engine produces 149 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, which falls short of the base engines in rivals like the Toyota Corolla (169 hp) and Mazda3 (186 hp). However, it should be noted that the Sentra still compares favorably with options like the base Kia K4 (147 hp) and Honda Civic (150 hp).

Additionally, the basic suspension design remains the same, although in this case, the independent front struts and multi-link rear suspension were already strong performers. The wheelbase is roughly identical, and the overall length has increased by just 0.6 inches. It’s clear that while the house looks and feels different, it sits on the same foundation.

Ultimately, whether someone thinks Nissan did enough with the 2026 Sentra depends on what they’re looking for in a vehicle. If you were hoping the new Sentra would have some more pop under the hood, you may be disappointed. On the other hand, those seeking an efficient daily sedan with a more refined ride quality, revamped technology, and a contemporary aesthetic will find the changes sufficient and welcome.

The Nissan Sentra has rarely pretended to be anything other than what it is: a practical compact sedan that can sometimes get dressed up, such as with the sporty SR and elegant SL. In redesigning the model for 2026, Nissan delivered some much-needed updates while maintaining what has made the Sentra successful. With pricing not expected to change significantly, the Sentra also establishes itself as one of the best features-per-dollar value in the segment, offering young professionals and others a path to a modern yet cost-conscious sedan.
