Nowadays, the cars that we drive are made all over the globe, so it’s kind of weird to think that there are models out there that we’ve never heard of before here in the United States. In fact, there are many models that we don’t have access to in North America, and one of them happens to be quite similar to a Honda favorite of ours, the one we know as the HR-V.
It’s called the ZR-V, and passing by your local Honda dealer, you won’t find this model on the lot, causing you to think a lot about what you’re missing out on, right? The HR-V and ZR-V share the same platform and have a lot in common, but when it comes to what the model we don’t get here offers to the ride, you may be surprised to find out that it’s one spunky little traveler.
The ZR-V In a Nutshell
In America, the Honda HR-V got a lot larger as part of its 2023 redesign, but in the rest of the world, that didn’t happen. Traditionally, the HR-V has been based on the same platform as the subcompact Honda Fit, but the new model has more in common with the compact Honda Civic. Overseas, where small cars remain a lot more popular, the HR-V continues to be based on a subcompact platform, and what we know as the “HR-V” is sold as the ZR-V, just with a few changes.
Because it’s not the smallest Honda SUV in overseas markets, the ZR-V is considered a sportier type of SUV, elevating the quality of the drive for those seeking out a dedicated daily commuter or small families in need of a more exciting way to drop the kids off at daycare each day. The ZR-V emits a more engaging persona, with a more energetic ride than what you’d typically find in the small SUV offerings sold here in America. It has a turbocharged engine beneath its polished hood, and it’s not afraid to surge down the road and provide its drivers with a little more pep in their step as they make their way to work.
Another thing that makes the ZR-V so appealing is that it’s accentuated with luxury-level appointments, marketed to drivers with more of a sophisticated palate, if you will. It’s certainly stylish, with its chiseled bodywork and coupe-like presence, making it a great pick for drivers who want to stand out in their small SUV without splurging for a luxury model. All in all, the ZR-V is sportier and more luxurious, enhancing the ride for many drivers worldwide who demand more high-quality goods in their everyday driving machines.
What Makes the ZR-V Different From the HR-V?
We already know that the ZR-V is larger, sportier, and more luxurious, but compared to what? While our HR-V and the overseas ZR-V may seem relatively the same, there are more differences than you may realize. First of all, the ZR-V is equipped with a different powertrain than the HR-V—a 1.5L i-VTEC turbocharged engine that makes 180 hp to make for a more thrilling ride, even if it’s just carting its occupants to the office each day.
The HR-V available in the United States is armed with a 2.0L four-cylinder that makes 158 hp, so it’s pretty obvious that the more engaging ride lies in the ZR-V. It’s important to note, though, that American drivers seeking out the HR-V aren’t necessarily looking for exhilarating performance. Instead, they just want a reliable and efficient way to get from Point A to Point B, so having all of that extra horsepower isn’t really needed. However, the ZR-V is also available with a hybrid powertrain that we don’t get here, which does seem like it would be a good fit for economically-minded American drivers.
Another thing that sets the ZR-V apart from the HR-V is the fact that the ZR-V is marketed as more of an upscale vehicle, as opposed to the HR-V, which is known to be more practical and budget-friendly. The ZR-V offers features like perforated leather upholstery and French accent stitching, giving it a more premium feel than what you’ll find in the HR-V. The good news is that if drivers are seeking out a more refined experience in the HR-V, they’re able to take advantage of this by opting for a higher-level trim; crisis averted.
However, other features that can be found in the ZR-V include a power tailgate, which allows drivers to access their cargo hold without having to use their hands. Simply kick a foot under the rear bumper, and it responds, making it perfect for busy parents loading up for the day. It’s too bad this isn’t available on any trim of the American-market HR-V.
Speaking of trims, the trim lineup for the ZR-V is different from what’s found in the HR-V’s lineup. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, though, seeing as drivers across the world most likely want different options than we do. You’ll find options like the Apex Edition or the Elegance on the menu for overseas drivers, while American travelers interested in the HR-V get to choose from the LX, Sport, and EX-L.
What Are the Similarities Between the ZR-V and HR-V?
Both the ZR-V and HR-V are great options for drivers, and they share plenty of the same features, making them top picks for daily travelers all across the world. The ZR-V is armed with the same Honda Sensing safety suite as the HR-V, which provides drivers with advanced safety and assistance aids to help protect them from various situations that may arise while traveling. From lane departure alerts to road departure mitigation, parking help, and more, you’ll find many of the same safety features in the ZR-V that are offered in the HR-V.
You’ll also find sporty touches throughout both models to intensify the journey a bit, including paddle shifters to add a bit more control and excitement to the ride. Both models are also built with Honda’s ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) Body Structure, which enhances safety on board. They even look similar, although there are some styling differences to cater to different markets.
Where It’s Sold
The ZR-V is sold worldwide in various markets, including Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Australia, and many other regions. Our version of the HR-V is primarily found in North America. You may think that we’re missing out, but in actuality, automakers seek to appeal to the different demographics found in each market. The ZR-V might not even perform well here if it were available, due to the fact that drivers interested in more premium features will typically want to upgrade to the larger CR-V. There’s really no need for another option in Honda’s small SUV lineup—here in the United States, at least.
ZR-V vs HR-V
Now you can say you learned something today. There is another version of the HR-V out there, called the ZR-V, and it’s marketed as being a more upscale, athletic, and efficient approach to the daily drive than the HR-V. It’s available in various markets outside of North America, appealing to the needs of a wide array of drivers.
Here in the United States, we have the HR-V, which is a fantastic option for daily commuters, small families, new drivers, first-time buyers, and many others. It offers a practical solution to many types of drives, with Honda-level reliability and engineering at its core. It’s ready and eager to enhance any type of journey with its fuel-efficient engine, superior safety suite, and unmatched dependability. But still, you might find yourself yearning for a ZR-V of your own, even if just because we can’t have it.
