Is the Underrated Envision the Best of GM’s Compact SUVs?

If you see a Buick Envision for sale, don’t write it off just because it has a slightly higher MSRP than General Motors’ other compact SUVs. General Motors makes a few solid options across its nameplates, Chevy, GMC, and Buick. The truth is that Chevy’s Equinox and GMC’s Terrain seem to get more publicity than the Buick Envision in the small SUV space.

I suspect the prominence of Equinox and Terrain mentions in other auto blogs, when covering compact SUVs, has to do with some shopper preferences and stereotyping. Some people assume someone shopping in the compact SUV market must be looking for a wallet-friendly model, and Buick is associated more with luxury models.

But the reality is, there are plenty of people who only need seating for five, and still appreciate high-end features. If you’ve been looking for a small SUV and want to treat yourself a bit, it’s time to give the Envision a second look. Below are seven reasons it beats the Equinox and Terrain amongst consumers who like the finer things in life. We’re looking specifically at the 2025 models.

#1 – Available Massaging Seats

I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand long commutes. They really make me feel like I’m wasting my life. But one way I can claim back some of my time is by at least being in a car I love to be in. And, the Buick Envision definitely fits the description because it has massaging seats.

I can’t tell you how often I lament that I don’t have the time or the money to go get regular massages at a spa. But the Envision at least lets me pretend I have a more opulent life, thanks to its massaging seats.

Now, the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain, as comfortable as they may be, do not offer massaging seats. They have highly adjustable seats, but no massage function. And just think of how nice it would be to have your seat easing away the stress from your muscles after a meeting with that one particularly infuriating coworker.

#2 – A Premium Sound System

If you’re like me, then you need your music to transport you to another place. Who doesn’t need that sometimes to help get you through the day? And you need a really solid sound system to do it. The GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox have totally decent sound systems; each offers a standard six-speaker setup.

But only the Envision delivers the 9-speaker Bose sound system. At this point, most audiophiles know that Bose is one of the leading manufacturers of sound systems that will just blow you away. It’s the choice brand for many bars, restaurants, and homes. So it’s pretty nice to have one available in your vehicle, which is probably the place where you listen to the most music, podcasts, and audiobooks.

#3 – A Massive Touchscreen Display

Many drivers measure the upscale feel of a cabin these days by its touchscreen. And I have to say that the Envision simply leaves the competition in the dust. It has a 30-inch-wide diagonal display screen. Read that again: 30 inches! Honestly, it makes you feel like you’re in the command center of a spaceship.

The Chevy Equinox has an 11.3-inch touchscreen, and the GMC Terrain has a 15-inch touchscreen. So they don’t come anywhere close to the Envision’s 30-inch touchscreen. If you simply love futuristic-looking technology, the Envision is where it’s at.

#4 – A Bigger, Stronger Engine

Are you a bit of a performance enthusiast? If you love the feeling of a powerful engine, then you should be looking at the Envision over the Terrain or Equinox. The Envision has a standard 2.0L Turbo EcoTec four-cylinder that delivers 228 hp.

The Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain have a standard 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder, with a hp of 175. You’re going to feel that hp difference when it’s time to merge onto a fast-moving freeway from a ramp, or when it’s time to go uphill.

It’s worth mentioning that the Envision also has one more gear in its transmission. It has a nine-speed transmission, compared to the Terrain and Equinox, which have an eight-speed transmission. That means the Envision is going to get you better efficiency and a smoother overall experience. If a smooth ride translates to an upscale feel to you, you’ll like the Envision’s transmission.

#5 – A Standard HD Surround Vision Camera

Like knowing what’s going on around your vehicle at all times? You will, guaranteed, with the Envision because it has a standard HD Surround Vision Camera. You’ll see real-time footage from that camera streaming on your enormous touchscreen. So when you’re in busy city environments where pedestrians and street vendors pop out like you’re in a video game, you’ll move with precision.

The Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain offer an HD Surround Vision camera on select trims. For the Terrain, it is standard on the highest trim, the Denali, but it is only available on the other trims. The Equinox doesn’t offer this feature as standard on any trim. If you’ve had your fair share of traffic tickets or simple dings and bumps, you might appreciate getting an HD Surround Vision camera standard.

#6 – A Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel

Love the look and feel of leather? The Envision offers a standard leather-wrapped steering wheel on all trims. It’s just one of those features that is a nod to the upscale nature of the Buick lineup.

The GMC Terrain has no leather-wrapped steering wheel option. It does have leather-appointed seats, but so does the Envision. The Chevy Equinox has no leather components available. It has available Evotex seats, which mimic leather. But when you want a true luxury feel, nothing comes close to leather.

#7 – A Panoramic Moonroof That’s Standard on the Avenir

Do you like to let the sun in on your drives? All three models offer a panoramic power moonroof, so you can open up the skies and see the sights better. However, only the Envision offers this feature as standard on one of its trims (the Avenir).

Neither the Terrain nor the Equinox offers its respective sunroof as standard on any trim. It’s only available as an add-on across the lineup. It’s just another example of how the Envision has luxury as one of its core features, rather than an option.

Treat Yourself With the Buick Envision

If you want a small SUV but also want a lavish experience, the Buick Envision makes more sense than the GMC Terrain or the Chevy Equinox. The Envision is GM’s offering for those who just need seating for five, but want to indulge a little in premium features.

The available massaging seats really set the extravagant tone, welcoming you into a relaxing experience. The premium Bose sound system helps establish the Envision as a model for luxury lovers. The massive touchscreen far outshines the competition.

With its bigger, more powerful engine and nine-speed transmission, the Envision delivers a more inspiring and smoother performance. A standard surround vision camera adds confidence on the road, while a standard leather-wrapped steering wheel makes driving more enjoyable. Finally, a moonroof that’s standard on the Avenir trim makes for an uplifting cabin experience.
