7 Reasons to Get Excited About the Mustang Mach-E

If you’ve been living under a rock for the last month or so, or you simply don’t follow auto news very much, then you might have missed out on Ford’s big announcement. They recently revealed that they have been working on an all-new all-electric SUV and so far, they have far surpassed what I would have expected from them. The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is not some base attempt at getting attention for a new EV – it is something different and a real contender for the best E-SUV on the road.

Yeah, that’s right; Tesla finally has some real competition out there. And that’s a good thing. Without competition in the auto industry, manufacturers stagnate, they stop innovating and developing new and exciting things, and just give us boxes on four wheels with an updated front grille so we’ll shut up about wanting something new. But with the Mustang Mach-E, Ford has really impressed me with something new and exciting. I figured it was just another barebones-effort EV from an American manufacturer, but I was wrong.
And if you thought that’s all the new Mach-E was too, then I’ve got some news for you…

Reason #1 – The Quick-Charge Range

A woman is charging her red 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E at home.

I know there are a lot of people out there still not won over by the whole Electric Vehicle concept, and I get that. But I think the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is going to change that and start converting some folks. And one of the main reasons I feel that way is its impressive quick-charge range. With the extended-range battery in the Mach-E, it can get up to an estimated 47 miles of range off just a 10-minute charge.

To be fair, this requires a fast-charge charger, but it is still an impressive feat. To also be fair, it falls a bit short of what some models of the Tesla Model Y can do with a 15-minute charge, but that’s another story. For now, I’d say that being able to get around town and run errands for the day off just 10 minutes of charging is something to be excited for.

Reason #2 –The Front Trunk (and Other Storage)

In terms of overall storage, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E does its job as an SUV with seating for up to five people and plenty of cargo space. You can cram all sorts of stuff into this beast thanks to 29 cu.ft. of space behind the rear seats and almost 60 cu.ft. of cargo room behind the front seats. So far so good, but that’s not what I’m really excited about…

What really got my attention is the front trunk under the hood. It’s a small area with 4.8 cu.ft. of additional space for whatever you want to cram in there. But, where Ford really went above and beyond is that they designed it to be washable and even stuck a drain into the bottom of it. That’s right: the 2021 Mustang Mach-E comes with a built-in cooler, just add ice and beverages.

Reason #3 – The Powerful GT Trim

Maybe the mileage range of a battery charge isn’t something you get excited about, that’s pretty understandable. I mean, fuel economy in a conventional vehicle is important, but not necessarily the sexiest of stats out there. Fortunately, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E delivers on more than just great battery range; it delivers on great power and performance too.

That “Mustang” in the name isn’t just all for show or a marketing ploy. When the designers at Ford sat down to create their new E-SUV, they realized they didn’t just want to make something forgettable that would be released with all the fanfare of an old mule sauntering down the road. They wanted to create a vehicle that would get attention, that would live up to the Ford name, and offer something new.

Their goal was to create an electric SUV that would offer real power and thrills for drivers, and so they set out to create a Mustang E-SUV. And they succeeded. The available GT trim doesn’t just have that badge slapped onto it; it earns it with an estimated 0-60 in the mid-3-second range. For now, that’s just an estimate, but something tells me Ford is going to hit that number and give us an SUV that lives up to more than 50 years of Mustang legacy.

Reason #4 – The Full-Charge Range

Of course, running errands is one thing, but going on a long road trip is something else. With the extended range battery in the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, you can get up to an EPA estimated 300 miles of range off a full battery charge. Now, I know, that’s an estimate and everyone with an EV has commented on how they never quite live up to the estimate. Even so, that matches what you can get with any other E-SUV out there, so I’m excited.

Reason #5 – The Updated SYNC 4 System

Full disclosure: I’m not normally someone that gets excited about something like the SYNC infotainment system in most Ford vehicles. It’s nice, sure, and it can be useful, but it’s not really something I get into. Then I saw what they’ve done with the next-generation SYNC 4 system and the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, and I changed my mind.

This new system lets you set up a profile with all the vehicle settings just the way you like them. The seat position, interior lighting, music settings, and even the instrument display can all be set how ever you like them. Now, let’s say you let your in-laws borrow your Mach-E to make a run to the store (and show off how successful you are), and they bring it back with all your settings messed up. When the SYNC system detects you coming with your phone, the Mach-E will automatically adjust all your settings back to how you like them before you even get inside.

I mean… c’mon!

Reason #6 – The Shiny, Shiny Glass Roof

You have to love the panoramic fixed glass roof that is available on the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E. Sure, it could be an attempt to keep up with what Tesla is doing, but I really don’t care. Innovation and improvements are always a good thing. The panoramic glass roof is gorgeous, it gives you an incredible view while you’re driving, and it includes a special coating to help the Mach-E’s interior stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I am completely into it.

Reason #7 –The E-Latch System

Finally, the FordPass app and how it works with the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E should be mentioned again. I already touched on this with the SYNC 4 system, but there’s something more here with the E-Latch. First, when you get out of the vehicle and walk away, it will detect that and automatically lock the doors behind you.

Even more impressive, however, when you approach your vehicle, it will detect you and illuminate a little button on the door. All you have to do is touch the button and the door opens for you. It’s like having a little digital butler to open your door, without having to worry about understanding a snooty British accent. Truly this is a brave new world we live in, and the Mach-E is making it a whole lot more exciting.
