2016 Chevy Equinox Performance

Why do the Equinox’s Sales Continue to Grow?

“Staying Power” is one of the most important factors in the automotive industry. Brands want a specific model to show gradual growth and consistent sales. This is generally easier said than done, which probably explains why we often see so many nameplates introduced and subsequently retired.

However, there are some vehicles that establish themselves immediately upon their release, and their sales continue to climb at rarely-seen rates. That’s certainly the case with the Chevy Equinox. Since the debut of its second-generation with the 2010 model year, the nameplate’s sales have increased every single year.

“Equinox is one of the rare vehicles that has increased its sales every year since its current generation was introduced,” said Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s Marketing Director. “It is a market-tested and proven product, and recommendations from enthusiastic customers form the backbone of the Equinox’s strength. We think 2014 should see the third straight year of sales above 200,000.”

So what has the Equinox done to consistently boost sales each year? Why has the compact SUV seen growing popularity, while other vehicles struggle to stay on the market?

“What gives a vehicle staying power is trust,” said Jessica Caldwell, a writer for Edmunds.com. “Vehicles that are top sellers despite their age are nameplates that car shoppers can trust to have good quality, durability and reliability. They aren’t designed with the latest fad in mind – they are vehicles that are tested over time and have proven to be good products.”

Still, there must be some specific reasons why the Equinox has seen these continuous sales increases. Sure, we know it’s won a number of awards, including being named the “Highest Ranked Compact SUV in Initial Quality” by J.D. Power in 2015. However, there must be more to the story as to why and how the nameplate has seen this unprecedented growth. Perhaps it’s the powerful and fuel-conscious engine, or maybe customers appreciate the abundance of technology. The evolving safety technologies could also play a significant role in influencing these incredible sales numbers.

We’ve explored several potential reasons why the Equinox has seen these positive sales trends. If you’ve been thinking about pursuing a Chevy Equinox in Miami, you’ll certainly be influenced by our guide below….

Reliable Engine

The Equinox is especially known for its incredible fuel economy. The 2.4-liter engine delivers an eye-popping 32 mile per gallon highway fuel efficiency, numbers that are rarely seen from an SUV. These numbers can be partly attributed to the Eco Mode, which helps maximize the vehicle’s efficiency.

Of course, the engine shouldn’t solely be touted for these specs. The unit also pumps out solid power numbers, including a best-in-class 301 horsepower. When coupled with the six-speed automatic transmission, drivers can expect a 0-to-60 time of 6.7 seconds, as well as a towing capacity that approaches 3,500 pounds.

While these specs may not necessarily appeal to all customers, there’s no denying that potential car buyers often target a vehicle’s power numbers. The Equinox will certainly deliver in 2016, and these capabilities should influence the nameplate’s sales.

Reliable Safety

The Equinox has established itself as one of the safety SUVs in its class. This sentiment was confirmed in 2015, as the nameplate was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

There are several new safety features included in the 2016 model. The Side Blind Zone Alert alerts the driver via the side mirrors when it’s unsafe to make a lane change, and the Rear Cross Traffic Alert will help prevent collisions as you’re reversing your SUV.

Of course, some of our favorite safety features will be returning to this year’s model. The Rear Park Assist will help guide you into a narrow parking spot, and drivers can utilize the Rear Vision Camera to see all of the happenings behind the Equinox. The Forward Collision Alert will adjust the brakes (if necessary) if you’re approaching another vehicle too rapidly.

If you do find yourself in a collision, you can be assured that help will be on its way. The OnStar Automatic Crash Response System will alert emergency personnel of your accident and immediately send help to the site of the crash.

Car buyers have shown that they’re now prioritizing safety more than before, and the Equinox’s variety of safety technologies and capabilities certainly contribute to the vehicle’s unique sales climb.

Advanced Technology

Customers seem to appreciate it when their new vehicle is decked out with the latest innovative technological features. Perhaps that explains why sales have continued to rise. The vehicle is consistently filled with the most advanced technology on the market, and that will certainly be the case for the 2016 model.

The 4G LTE Wi-Fi will allow your passengers to always stay connected to the internet, which will be especially helpful if you constantly have to travel with your children. It can be difficult to keep them entertained and occupied during a long car ride, but their ability to stay on the grid should keep them out of your hair.

The technology won’t just appeal to your younger occupants. The Chevrolet MyLink system will allow you to utilize a number of different applications via the seven-inch diagonal color touch-screen display. Whether you want to access your favorite radio station or an elaborate navigation system, it will be possible in the Equinox.

Plus, the Siri Eyes Free technology allows you to connect your iPhone to the system, meaning you can use your smartphone without taking your hands off the wheel. Want to make a phone call or read a text message? You’ll have easy access to all of your phone’s capabilities, and you won’t be compromising your safety.

Speaking of safety, the OnStar RemoteLink Mobile Application will keep your new Equinox safe from potential thieves. Via your smartphone, an owner will have the ability to remotely start their vehicle, lock or unlock the doors, or sound the horn/flash the lights. This will certainly dissuade someone from breaking into your new ride. In the event that the vehicle is stolen, the Chevrolet MyLink navigation system will allow you to monitor the progress of your Equinox.
Will this sales trend continue? Chevy tends to think so. The brand recently invested $12 million to help boost Equinox production from 288 daily units to 352 daily units at their Oshawa Assembly facility. This wasn’t only good news for future buyers, but also for the brand’s employees. The move will temporarily save 200 jobs at the plant.

“This new investment represents a very effective way for us to meet strong demand for the Chevrolet Equinox and it’s positive news for our community. We are focused on delivering great products for our customers,” said Managing Director Steve Carlisle (via Drew Singer of GMAuthority.com).

Considering the consistent yearly increase in sales, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the brand decided to boost production. These numbers are generally unprecedented in the automotive industry, and Chevy will predictably do everything in its power to continue this trend.

Luckily, we shouldn’t expect the brand to release the same Equinox for each model year. The engineers have clearly recognized what works and what doesn’t, and they’re not going to stand idle until the sales suddenly drop. Instead, the manufacturers are going to continue to find ways to evolve the nameplate, and this should keep sales climbing for the foreseeable future.
